Science for Kids (Summer 2018)

In Summer 2018, Zoey Werbin '17 and I created an activity on ocean acidification for Science for Kids, an HHMI-supported summer science program run in collaboration with the Chester Children's Chorus. Science for Kids provides hands-on activities and labs for children from Chester-Upland schools, an underserved district near Swarthmore. We worked with Jocelyne Noveral's Science 3 (Biology) class. Students learned how carbon emissions cause oceans to acidify and discovered the effects of acidification on carbonate shells.

Through the Skype a Scientist program, I chatted with Ms. Mathiesen's 6th grade class from Hillside Elementary School in West Des Moines, Iowa; Ms. Zeran's 7th grade class (left) at Fulton K-8 School in San Diego, California; and Ms. Brandt's 7th grade class (right) at Vancouver Christian School in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Strath Haven High School Statistics Fair (Spring 2016)
I gave a talk on statistics and paleontology for over 200 AP Stat, AP Bio, and other students for the Statistics Fair at Strath Haven High School in the local Wallingford-Swarthmore School District.

In Summer 2013, our research group helped out with Science for Kids. We worked with Jocelyne Noveral's Science 3 (Biology) class. Linda Gai '15 (far left) and Chengying Wang '15 (left) helped out as teaching assistants/counselors, and I created a geological time scale activity. Susannah Porter of UCSB (right) also gave a guest lecture on dinosaurs.
Teachers as Scholars (Fall 2012)
I taught a course on the fossil record for the Teachers as Scholars program, a collaboration between Swarthmore College and the Wallingford-Swarthmore and Rose Tree-Media school districts. This lifelong learning program gave K–12 teachers and staff a chance to be students again and experience the joys of learning. We discussed the extinction of the dinosaurs and myths and misunderstandings about evolution, took a tour of "living fossils" on campus, and did a skype chat with paleontologist Felix Marx in New Zealand about his then-recent paper on whale evolution in Science.
