Abstract
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Principles and Pitfalls of Displaying Data
Steve C. Wang
One need only peruse a copy of Time, USAToday, or a professional journal to
see that data graphics have become ubiquitous. In this talk we will explore
principles for graphically displaying data well (and badly), many of which
were first elucidated by graphics guru Edward Tufte. We will also see how
one can use graphics to mislead (a subdiscipline of "lying with
statistics"). We will examine many graphics from a variety of sources and
view some candidates for The Worst Graphic of All Time.
Prerequisities: No statistical or scientific
background is assumed. Audience participation is expected.
